Vimal Gudka was a creative soul since her childhood. Becoming a make-up artist was her destiny. She talks to us about what it took to get there and what aspiring make-up artists have to look forward to!
Vimal says,“I was always fascinated with drawing, art and craft and I love colours. I felt that only makeup was a field which would satisfy all my sensibilities and help me utilize my creative skills. When I was a teenager, I used watch TV shows and was very inspired by them.”
She reminisces,“I applied makeup for the first time ever, on my cousin when I was in 5th standard.” She has indeed a come a long way from that, with an impressive 17 years of experience, Vimal talks about how she turned her passion into a career, “I had a lot of cousins and neighbours who always used to call me for help and advice on dressing up while going for parties and functions. One day my Mother and my cousin brother Akshay, advised that I should think of this as a serious career choice. Especially since the industry was booming and had lot of scope.”
She admits that,“The best things about being a makeup artist is you get to do something fun and creative daily, get to meet lot of new people, get to travel a lot and learn new things!”
As an artist, your life is quite busy, but also very rewarding. In a typical day, Vimal’s schedule goes something like this: “If I have a bridal assignment, I get ready and pack my bags, a very important part is to ensure that my brushes are sanitised. I reach the venue and meet with the bride and her family. It sometimes happens that the bride is busy with some ritual, in that case, I have to wait for the bride to get free. After that, I do her makeup, this usually goes on for one to two hours. Sometimes, I am required to stay for the day, in which case, I also do make-up touch ups in between.
When there’s a commercial project, like a shoot, we generally start early and stay till the whole shoot is over. But it’s not just work! There are a lot of fun parts also, like interacting with models and other industry persons. During shoots, we take breaks, have food together and enjoy as well.”
I prodded her and asked which type of assignments does she prefer? She replies,“I enjoy all types of assignments, being a creative person. However, in a shoot the make-up is slightly more creative, we sit and decide about the kind of look we are going to do. In bridal assignment there is creativity as well, but at the same time there is a limitation on how much you can do.”
Well, being a make-up artist sure sounds amazing! But like any other profession, there are pros to the cons. When asked about the biggest challenges she has faced in her profession, she says,“The biggest challenge is the ever-changing dynamics. Another thing that can be slightly discouraging is when sometimes clients are unwilling to experiment with looks and products. They need to understand that make-up is a form of art and they should give the artist the freedom to experiment.”
She concludes by giving sage advice,“Anyone who wants to become a makeup artist needs to know that they should become a makeup artist only if you are willing to experiment and constantly keep yourself updated. This is one exciting field where you will find some newness every day!”
